A Beginning Look at Ritual - Spells...
...for those who have read first my lessons in magic!
Magic is really quite an interesting subject, and not to mention very inspiring. So, if you are interested in things such as this, then don't be afraid to try! Below, I have listed a growing list of spells for the beginner. These are simple, and easy to do. However, I recommend reading the previous page first, on my lessons in magic!
Candle Magic
This is one of the most well used forms of magic! Candles are mystical and quite enchanting, in my opinion. It is relatively cheap as well and you can even be crafty enough to make your own candles! Really, the possibilities are endless and this is one of my favorites. Just a word of caution, be careful as with any other magic. And don't ever leave candles unattended! If you must, then you can set them in an empty sink to finish burning if you have to. Good luck!
Tealight Petition Magic
by Ellen Dugan in her book "Cottage Witchery"
If you wish to perform petition magic with a tealight, then write the request on a small piece of paper, fold it up, and tuck it neatly beneath the tealight, in the bottom of the little metal candle cup. Add a pinch of your corresponding herb to the cup, replace the candle, light it, and work your spell. When the candle is finished burning, you will notice that your slip of paper is sealed to the bottom of the cup and covered in wax. Your spell is safely sealed and you may now dispose of the little metal candle cup in the garbage. Here is a quick candle charm to go along with your herbal candle magic.
Tealight candle burning warm and bright,
Lend your magic to me on this night.
Herbs and Spices add strength and magical power
Goddess, bless my work in this enchanted hour.
You may also choose to use a coloured version of the tealight, if you wish. Refer to my colour magic chart on lessons in magic page!

The Hag Stone Knot
found in 'Craft of the Wise' by Vikki Bramshaw
The Hag Stone
The hag stone is a folk name for any stone or pebble which has a natural hole running all the way through it, which was created by hundreds, if not thousands, of years of water erosion caused by the ebb and flow of the sea. There are various meanings behind the Hag Stone, and finding such a stone is believed to be extremely fortuitous.
The holey, or 'Holy' Hag stone represented the sacred circle, the wheel of life, and the Mother Goddess. It was considered a spiritual gateway, and it was said that if you peered through the hole at dusk you would see the creatures of the otherworld. The Hag Stone was also sometimes called a Wishing Stone, and could be held in the left hand and rubbed to make wishes come true. It is quite rare to find a natural Hag Stone; they are more common on beaches, but can sometimes be found inland, in the earth over which ancient seas used to flow. The best Hag Stones, however, are the ones which come to you. You can look for hours at the beach to find a stone and return home empty handed, but another day step outside into your garden and come upon one right away. A Hag Stone which is found by accident is thought to be luckier than one actively sought out. |
The Hag Stone Knot
If you are lucky enough to find more than one Hag Stone, you can make a Hag Stone Knot. Take several Hag Stones and pass a red cord through their centers. Tie each stone at regular intervals along the red cord, focusing on the purpose of the Hag Stone as you tie each knot. The ideal number of stones for this spell is nine, if you are lucky enough to find that many. If not, tie your one or two Stones onto the cord and add to it when you find more. The Hag Stone Knot can then be hung on the bed post to bring passion and fertility, or taken outside and swung around the head to chase away storms. If you hold it in your palm whilst you sleep, it will help you reach the otherworlds in your dreams.
While you are not using your Knot, tie it in the window to evoke the powers of prosperity and protection, and the strength of the sea. |
